How we started
The history of Sheriat started long ago as God worked in both Maryke’s and my heart to empower woman…
Seven years ago as I worked as a social worker for Abba Adoptions, we realized that because many women have no skills and no jobs they are financially dependent on men and disempowered in many ways. The result is abuse, unplanned pregnancies that result in abortion or adoption, poverty and many other social difficulties.
We started a small skills development project at the house where the mothers (who wanted to make their babies available for adoption) stayed while they where pregnant.
A few years later we started Sheriat as an independent NPO with the vision to empower South African women in a holistic way. Not just teaching them a skill to be able to find a job but also offering emotional support and counseling, spiritual input and general work and life skills.
